This Week in Our Classroom

Phonics
This week in phonics students will be learning about how letters are formed and will be working on writing lower case letters.  Throughout the day we will continue to work on knowing all the letters of the alphabet and the sounds that each letter makes.

Reading
In reading this week students will be learning about what makes a story fiction.  Students will learn that fictional stories are made up and can include elements that are make-believe, such as animals that talk or people who can fly.

Guided Reading
Students will be practicing reading each word on the page and begin learning kindergarten sight words.  The words we are working on this week are: can, like, I, the. Students who do not know all their letters will be working on letter recognition during this time as well.

Writing
In writing students will be working on telling a story that has a beginning, middle, and end.  The beginning of the story should be who is in the story and where it took place. The middle of the story should be about what happened. The end of the story should be about how you felt.

Math
In math students will be working on counting forward and backward by ones to 20.

Learning Team Meetings
I sent sign up sheets for Learning Team Meetings home in homework folders last week.  Please make sure you sign up for the 3 times that you can come in for a meeting about your child's progress.  I will highlight your scheduled time.  Learning Team Meetings will be held from Monday, October 1 - Thursday, October 4.

Special Notes
No School - Friday, September 28
Homework Folders - Make sure you send your child's homework folder to school with them every day and check the folder for notes or homework every night. We typically have homework Monday-Thursday.  Also, take out papers that are checked with a star, stamp, or sticker so that the folder won't be cluttered and unorganized.
