Ann Arbor Hands On Museum

The field trip tomorrow is going to be RESCHEDULED for Friday, May 3, due to the possibility of tomorrow being a snow day and/or roads being unsafe for driving all the way to Ann Arbor. There is a winter weather advisory starting at 9pm tonight through noon Friday.

If you signed up for a chaperone but cannot attend the field trip on Friday, May 3, please let me know.

Valentines Day

We will be celebrating Valentines Day on Thursday, February 14.  Students may bring Valentines and a treat to pass out as long as they bring enough for every student.  There are 17 students in our class.

This Week in Our Classroom

Phonics
This week in phonics students will be practicing reading sight words and learning the word families: -ay, -at, and -an.

Guided Reading
Students will be practicing reading each word on the page and learning kindergarten sight words.  The sight words that students will be working on are: is, , in, love, look, and, are.  Different students are working on different words.

Writing
In writing students will be working on writing about their opinion.  Students will listening to fairytales and writing about their favorite character, place, or event from the story.

Math
In math this week students will be working on identifying 3D shapes such as: pyramid, sphere, cube, cylinder, and cone.

Hands On Museum Field Trip - Friday, February 8

Students will be on a field trip all day to the Ann Arbor museum this Friday.

Field Trip and 100th Day of School Shirts

The kindergarten and first grade classes are going on a field trip to the Ann Arbor Hands on Museum.  

When: Friday, February 8, 2013

Cost: $7 for each student and each chaperone. Money must be in to your classroom teacher by Friday, February 1st.

Where: Ann Arbor Hands on Museum

Dress: Free dress - the entire museum is inside, including the lunch room. It will be a long bus ride so students should dress warmly.

Lunch: Bring a BAG lunch. For your child's convenience, use a disposable bag, with your child's name  written LARGE on the bag.

Pick Up/Drop off: Students will be gone all day. The buses will leave UPA at 9am and return around 3pm. Students will still be dropped off and picked up at the regular times.

Students will be making a shirt for the 100th day of school. We are asking parents to pay for the cost of the shirt.

In math this week students will be working on identifying how many sides and corners different shapes have.

Picture Retake Day - Tuesday, January 15

If you would like your child to retake their school pictures, bring you old package to picture retake day. Any student that was absent on picture day will also be able to take their photo.

Winter Clothing

If the temperature is above 30 degrees, we will go outside for recess.  Please make sure your child has a warm winter coat, a hat, gloves, and a scarf if necessary.  When there is snow on the ground, students without boots will be allowed to play on the paved part of the playground that is shoveled so that their feet do not get wet, but not the rest of the playground.

Guided Reading
Students will be practicing reading each word on the page and learning kindergarten sight words.  We will be reviewing sight words this week that students have already been working on.

Writing
In writing students will be working on writing words for their stories by writing the sounds they hear in words.

Math
In math this week students will be working on identifying more complex shapes such as trapezoid, rhombus, and hexagon.

Journal Writing

Students will begin writing in a journal for homework this week.  I will send home the journal on Thursday and it is due back to school on Monday.  There will be more specific directions attached to the journal.
