This Week in Our Classroom

Phonics
This week in phonics students will be learning about letters in names and words.  Throughout the day we will be working on knowing all the letters of the alphabet and the sounds that each letter makes. Students will also be learning about words that rhyme.

Reading
In reading this week students will be learning about concepts of print. We will learn about how to hold and open a book, identifying the front cover, knowing how to read from left to right and top to bottom, looking at each word when reading, and knowing what a title, author and illustrator is.

Writing
In writing students will be practicing telling a story orally, then being able to illustrate the story and label the picture with the first letter of a word or by sounding out a word.

Math
In math students will be working on identifying and writing number 1-9 and knowing the quantity that each number represents.

Color Chart
This week we will begin using a color chart in the classroom to encourage students to follow classroom routines and rules. Every student will start the day on the color green. If students are making good choices, they will move up the chart. If students are not making good choices throughout the day, they will move down the chart. Below are the colors on the chart and an explanation of what each color means. At the end of each day, check in with you child to see where they ended their day.

Purple - I made excellent choices today.
Blue - I made good choices today.
Green - I came to school ready to learn.
Yellow - I needed some reminders to make good choices today.
Red - I did not make good choices today. My teacher will call home or send a note in my homework folder. Please talk to me about making better choices tomorrow.

Special Notes
Gym shoes - Make sure your child brings gym shoes to school to change into for gym class.
Change of clothes - Please keep a change of clothing in your  child's backpack in case of an emergency.
Snack - If you are able to send in a healthy snack for our class, we would greatly appreciate it!
